Teens charged over detention centre unrest

Six teenagers are facing more than 60 charges after a violent disturbance at a youth detention centre in Townsville.

Police say the teenagers hurled bricks and pieces of metal at police and detention centre officers after taking over parts of the Belgian Gardens facility last month.

They say the teenagers caused significant damage to the centre, with police negotiators called in to resolve a six-hour stand off.

The teens, aged between 14 and 16, are facing charges including wilful damage, and the serious assault of detention centre officers and police.
