Tasmanian politicians freeze salaries

Tasmanian politicians will freeze their salaries for 12 months as the state government prepares a tough budget.

Premier Will Hodgman has told parliament his government won't act on an eight per cent pay rise recommended by an independent tribunal.

The Parliamentary Salaries and Allowances Tribunal has recommended MPs' base salaries be increased from $118,000 to $128,000 over two years.

"Given the very tough fiscal circumstances and the budget mess left by Labor and the Greens, the government has decided that we will not be bringing forward any legislative amendments in response to this report," Mr Hodgman said.

That would effectively freeze salary rises for 12 months, he said.

"This is an issue of some public interest and often one of some contention," Mr Hodgman said.

"In our view it requires a full community discussion ... so that there can be consensus moving forward."

The report also suggests a 2.7 per cent increase in electorate allowances and 12 weeks' pay to help MPs who lose their seats to resettle.

Mr Hodgman said any increase needed to be considered in the context of $1.1 billion of cumulative deficits over the state budget forward estimates.

He said the government would work on a position on MPs' pay from July 1, 2015.
