Truck fire closes Tas highway for hours

The main highway between Hobart and the city's airport was closed for hours when a truck caught fire after its load of cane mulch came in contact with the exhaust, police say.

Emergency services were called to the Tasman Highway at Cambridge about 10am on Tuesday where the flat-tray truck was piled high with burning bags of mulch.

Fire crews dragged pallets off the truck to extinguish the mulch and it then took hours to clean up before the highway was reopened mid-afternoon.

Traffic diversions were in place during the closure.
