Tassie health budget gets doctors' tick

Tasmania's record budget spend on public health services has been welcomed by doctors but political opponents have labelled it a missed opportunity.

Liberal Premier Will Hodgman on Thursday delivered a $5.8 billion budget, headlined by an additional $658 million over four years for health including 350 extra staff and 106 permanent public hospital beds.

"The state government has listened to many of the concerns raised by the health sector," Australian Medical Association Tasmania president Stuart Day said.

The budget won't ease pressure on emergency departments this winter, the Labor opposition said.

The Greens claim the economic plan squanders the opportunity of increased revenue.

The 2017/18 budget is expected to run at a $54 million surplus but forecast credits across the following three years could be at risk due to possible GST distribution changes.
