Tasmania wants a share of the $30 billion spent each year on defence and is starting with a bid for the Land 400 combat vehicle.

A prototype has been built in the state and Premier Will Hodgman says it is time for Tasmania to get more than the 0.03 per cent of defence spending it currently gets.

"The team is working towards securing one of the largest Australian Defence Force vehicle replacement contracts in history - the Land 400 phase two contract," Mr Hodgman said on Wednesday.
