Tas drivers to give bikes a wider berth

Cyclists can soon breathe a little easier on Tasmanian roads, as drivers will be able to legally give them a wider berth when passing.

The Tasmanian government will change the law to allow a vehicle to cross the road's centre-line anytime, when safe, to maintain a safe distance when over-taking a bike.

A safe distance is one metre on roads with a speed limit at or below 60km/h, or else 1.5 metres.

"We want Tasmanians to feel safe travelling around our community, whether cycling, driving or walking, and are committed to enhancing road safety," government MP and lower house Speaker Elise Archer said.

New "pass cyclists safely" signage will also be introduced to popular cycling routes.

The change will take effect on February 25.
