Millions needed for Tas pipes

Tasmania's ageing water and sewerage services need a $1.8 billion overhaul, and local government is calling on state and federal counterparts to chip in.

The planned works, which were endorsed by a meeting of TasWater representatives on Thursday, would include infrastructure upgrades across the state and the provision of safe drinking water to several small towns where it is now necessary to boil tap water before consumption.

"We would like to see the state put in $100 million spread over 10 years, and federal funding over the same period to the tune of $300 million," Northern Midlands Council mayor David Downie said, adding that TasWater would fund most of the works.
