Two German hikers have been rescued by helicopter after they became trapped in thick bush in rough weather in Tasmania's southwest.

The pair had spent 10 days following a river towards Federation Peak, but set off an emergency beacon early on Saturday.

"Due to record rainfall, the New River was in flood, making the journey exceptionally difficult," a Tasmania Police statement said.

"The pair were winched out of thick bushland and flown to Hobart, cold but uninjured."

Police say the men, aged 39 and 40, were experienced and well-equipped, and their rescue was a reminder that Tasmania's weather could be "hostile ... even in summer months".
