P-plater rips up new Hobart road with 250m burnout

A teenage P-plater has lost his car for a month and will face court for performing a burnout so large it stopped traffic and damaged the surface of Hobart's new Kingston Bypass.

The man, 19, left a 250-metre streak on the road, Senior Sergeant Adam Stanwix of Kingston police said on Sunday.

"The vehicle left a large burnout mark on the new roadway measuring 250 metres in length," he said.

"This caused a huge plume of smoke that blanketed the entire area and significantly reduced visibility, forcing other traffic to stop.

"The burnout damaged the new road and police will be liaising with the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources in respect of the cost of repairs."

The Margate man was arrested and will face the Hobart Magistrates Court in March on a range of charges.

The man's white Toyota Supra was clamped for 28 days.
