Shopping chain Target has joined the growing list of retail stores offering specially designed shopping trolleys for kids and adults with special needs.

‘Caroline’s Cart’, which has a forward-facing, extra-large seat will be available nationwide in the US from next month, according to Today.com.

It was created by Drew Ann and David Long from Alabama, for their daughter Caroline who uses a wheelchair.

“I remember so desperately struggling with a wheelchair, a two-year-old and a shopping cart,” Ms Ann said.

“I remember, I thought, ‘what would help me?’”

Shortly after, Ms Ann sat down and came up with the design of the cart, which was later ordered by a supermarket in Colorado.

Caroline’s Cart is already in use in smaller chains throughout America and Norway.

Similar designs can also be found in some Coles and Woolworths stores across Australia.
