Brisbane man acquitted of assaulting police officers in street brawl

A Brisbane man who was accused of assaulting three police officers during a Fortitude Valley brawl in 2019 has been acquitted of all charges.

Tamba Gborie had his matter heard during a four-day trial, where CCTV and body camera footage was played, showing police grabbing the 25-year-old around the neck.

Mr Gborie had been trying to calm down his friend who had been given a "move on direction" from police minutes earlier when officers alleged Mr Gborie obstructed them.

Barrister Eoin Mac Giolla Ri convinced the Brisbane jury that Mr Gborie was not guilty, arguing that officers had no powers to arrest his client because there was no "reasonable suspicion" that he had committed an offence.

Mr Mac Giolla Ri also claimed police had used unnecessary force and that one of the officers had performed a chokehold that is banned except under exceptional circumstances.

Mr Gborie was formally discharged on all five counts of assault.
