Take action on puppy farms, Senate urges

The Senate has called on state and territory governments to take action against inhumane puppy farms.

The upper house on Monday backed a motion by Liberal senator Joanna Lindgren and Greens senator Lee Rhiannon calling for states and territories to regulate the sale of cats and dogs and adopt a national register of approved breeders.

They've also called on Australians to be careful about where they buy their puppies this Christmas, and encouraged people to consider adopting rescued animals from pounds and shelters.
