An ambulance was dispatched to the Glenmore Park home at around 2am after a triple zero call had been made but with no response from the caller.

It is unclear if she was the one to make the emergency call.

Superintendent Brett McFadden said the attack was serious and that the woman had suffered a "traumatic personal experience".

"There is no doubt this woman has gone through a very traumatic experience," he told reporters in Penrith.

"It does take some time and experience to work with people who have experienced a very difficult and traumatic personal experience."

The victim was believed to be falling in and out of consciousness and has been taken to Nepean Hospital for treatment.

She had no external injuries and is in a stable condition.

Police said they were waiting on toxicology results to find out if the 33-year-old was drugged. "
