A man accused of stabbing his wife to death in Sydney's west last night had found out she was having an affair, his lawyer has said.

Shahab Ahmed, 33, is expected to apply for bail in Parramatta Local Court on Monday afternoon.

He appeared at Parramatta Local Court yesterday, charged with the murder of his 29-year-old wife, Khondkar Faihi Elahi.

Mr Ahmed's lawyer, Zemarai Khatiz, said his client had been in a distressed and emotional state since the incident.

"The deceased was having an affair. He found out about it and the relationship came to a very tragic end," Mr Khatiz said outside court.

Mr Ahmed, originally from Bangladesh, moved to Sydney about five years ago, Mr Khatiz said.

Police arrived at the Campbell Street unit in Parramatta late last night, where they found Ms Elahi with a stab wound to her chest.

She was taken to Westmead Hospital where she later died.

Mr Khatiz said his client intended fighting the charge.
