Sydney's controversy-laden tram network has hit another road bump after a car crashed into a tram in Surry Hills this afternoon.

The tram was dislodged from its tracks about 4.45pm, bringing traffic on South Dowling Street to a halt in both directions.

The tram is part of the recently launched L2 line operating between Circular Quay and Randwick.

Police say there are no reports of significant damage but light rail services were cancelled due to the collision.

Rail replacement buses replaced the tram between Central and Moore Park until services resumed just before 9pm.

Traffic in the area is now back to normal, with all lanes of South Dowling Street reopened now that the crash has been cleared.
