Sydney trains set to shut for four days from Thursday amid ongoing dispute

Train services are set to be completely cancelled from Thursday for a four-day period as the union's pay dispute with the state government continues.

All Sydney train services could be cancelled between Thursday and Sunday, impacting millions of people as they try to get to work, university and school.

Transport Minister Jo Haylen addressed the media to warn of the disruptions after negotiations with the union fell through today.

"This will cause major disruption to the millions of people that rely on the Sydney trains network to get to work on time, to get their kids to school," Haylen said.

"It is not possible to provide transport services equivalent to the Sydney Trains network."

It's not confirmed if the cancellations will definitley go ahead, or what replacement services would be available if they do.

The government is offering a 3 per cent pay rise over three years, while the union is asking for a 32 per cent increase over 4 years.

It's understood Metro services will not be affected.
