NSW police have concluded a major operation at Sydney's Town Hall Station about 90 minutes after an emergency evacuation order shut down the station, causing havoc for commuters.

Hundreds of people were ushered out of the station and all train and light rail services to and from Town Hall were suspended due to a "commuter disturbance", Sydney Trains confirmed.

Police and other emergency personnel have conducted a major sweep of the area but identified nothing of concern.
