A man believed to have been injured by gunfire during a shooting at a Sydney wharf on New Year's Day may be a member of the Brothers 4 Life gang, reports 2UE.

The 31-year-old man was found in Bondi Beach shortly after the shooting, which took place shortly before 11:35pm at Rose Bay Wharf.

Police now believe he was aboard the luxury cruiser Oscar II when it was struck by at least 18 bullets.

The man, who was conscious when police arrived in Bondi, was taken to St Vincent's Hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries to his shoulder.

He discharged himself from hospital on Thursday morning and is refusing to talk to police, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

Witnesses to the shooting told police that the gunman fled through the nearby course of the Royal Sydney Golf Club.
