Two suspects on the run after man shot dead in his western Sydney home

Two suspects are on the run after a man was shot dead at his home in Sydney's west in what police are calling a targeted attack.

Authorities are now looking at a possible drug debt as a motive in the shooting at a property on Rymill Road, Tregear at 2.30am today.

Police say two men armed with a large calibre weapon forced their way into the granny flat where a 30-year-old was shot in the leg and shoulder.

He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics but died at the scene.

"Well, I was in bed… actually when I first heard it, I heard a noise and thought that doesn't sound like crackers," neighbour Edwin Denyer told 9News.

"I got up, and I got to the door there, and I heard screaming. So, then I knew something was really wrong."

Ryan Conners, another neighbour, told 9News he heard loud bangs and scuffling before hearing a number of dogs barking non-stop.

The victim's partner was at home at the time of the shooting. The victim is known to police.

"There's a number of things that he's known for but certainly drug-related matters," NSW Police Superintendent Trent King said.

Police say the shooting was a planned hit, with detectives examining whether a drug debt was the motive behind the shooting.

The car the suspects used to get away is a major clue for investigators.

"Basis on the injuries that have been sustained, it appears as though it was an intention to kill this person," Superintendent King said.

Police shut down Rymill Road today with a crime scene established.
