Disability carer allegedly caught out fleecing her patients

New details have emerged on how quick-thinking shop staff were able to catch out a disability worker who allegedly stole thousands of dollars from her vulnerable patients.

Violetta Hanson was arrested yesterday when police stormed a Western Sydney pawn shop where the unsuspecting woman was allegedly trying to offload stolen jewellery.

Detectives had been monitoring the 46-year-old for months and shop staff had a photo of her, ready to call police as soon as she came in.

"We just kept her waiting for about 45 minutes until the police arrived," shop assistant Meaghan Taylor told 9News.

"She was a little bit edgy, she kept coming back to the kiosk asking how long we're going to be - about three times."

Eventually police arrived and took the Blacktown mother into custody.

She is accused of fleecing about $40,000 in jewellery and cash from terminally ill and disabled people in her care across Wiley park, Bexley, Drummoyne and Doonside over ten months.

"It is a significant betrayal of trust by a person employed to care for the most vulnerable members of our community," NSW Police Superintendent Paul Devaney told 9News.

One of her alleged victims is Nadine Jebraiel, a 53-year-old woman who is heavily disabled with Multiple Sclerosis.

"How could she? How could she? We took her on a cruise with us. We treated her like family," Ms Jebraiel's distraught mother Barbara Rizgalla told 9News.

"She is ruthless. She can talk to you with a straight face."

Hanson worked for numerous support agencies, providing domestic and hygiene assistance for terminally ill and disabled people.

Police allege she attended at least five pawn shops with stolen goods and made about $40,000 in ten months.

She was charged with six counts of stealing property in a house and four counts of making false statements.

Hanson pleaded guilty to all but two of the charges against her.

She will be sentenced next month.
