A woman's body found dumped in bushland in Sydney's south could have been there undetected for days, weeks or even months, police say.

Detectives have seized two weeks' worth of CCTV footage from nearby businesses in the hopes of piecing together a timeline.

A jogger made the gruesome discovery about 7.30am yesterday in bushland next to Foreshore Road in Botany.

South Sydney Police Area Command Superintendent Andrew Garner said the woman's body was wrapped in plastic.

It was found only metres from the side of the road in Sir Joseph Banks Park bushland in Botany, near Sydney Airport.

Garner said the walker was given support by police due to the confronting scene.

Homicide Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said the body was in a severe state of decomposition and could have been in the bushland for weeks.

"Unfortunately, the length of time the body has been there is still unknown. It was in a severe state of decomposition," Homicide Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty told media yesterday.

"At this stage, we are treating it as a suspicious death."

Her cause of death also remains unknown.

"There may be people out there who are missing a loved one," he said.

"[She] could be someone's mother, daughter, sister... friend."
