In pictures: The harbour city laces up for the Sydney Marathon
This year's edition was the first to fall in the category of a World Major Marathon, a title bestowed on only six other marathons worldwide.
The 42-kilometre course begins in North Sydney, crosses the Harbour Bridge, passing through The Rocks, Martin Place, Taylor Square, and Moore Park, before finishing at the Sydney Opera House.
The marathon began with the wheelchair athletes at around 6.20am, with the elite group consisting of the front runners for both the men and the women's races beginning just after 6.30am.
The favourite in the men's race was Eliud Kipchoge (third from right), a two-time Olympic gold medallist and the only man to run a marathon in less than two hours.
He was racing in the event for the first time.
In the women's race, Sifan Hassan was the favourite; the Olympic gold medallist had skipped the World Championships for the first time in 15 years to be in Sydney.
She was part of the leading pack as they crossed underneath the Harbour Bridge.
A cascade of runners made their way under the Harbour Bridge and past Mrs Macquaries Chair.
