A man has been rescued from a storm drain after getting stuck in it while trying to retrieve a thong.

Police were called to Chester Road at Epping, in Sydney's north west last night following concerns for welfare.

Emergency services found the 42-year-old trapped in a street drain.

Fire and rescue NSW officers released the man who was treated at the scene before being taken to Royal North Shore Hospital.

It is believed he suffered an injury to his hip.

He was taken to hospital with a suspected hip injuries.
