Strike forces closure of Sydney light rail network, commuters urged to find alternative transport

Sydney commuters are being warned to expect disruptions today, with a 24-hour strike on the city's three light rail networks under way.

The action is being taken by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) which is calling on network operator Transdev to provide a 23 per cent pay rise over four years and five extra sick days for workers.

No trams will run on the L1 Dulwich Hill, L2 Randwick or L3 Kingsford tram lines.

RTBU New South Wales tram and bus division secretary David Babineau said its members rejected an improved offer last week.

"It simply doesn't provide them with the wages and conditions they need and deserve," he said.

"It's disappointing that the company has forced workers to this point because we know it has an impact on commuters, but unfortunately light rail workers have been left with no option other than to continue to take protected industrial action."

Transport for NSW said it had organised a limited number of bus services to help school students most affected by the light rail strike.

The school communities of Sydney Boys and Sydney Girls High will have additional bus services to help get them to and from school.

The strike also coincides with big crowds heading to the CBD for the Vivid Festival.

Commuters are being urged by Transport for NSW to find alternative transport and allow for extra travel time.
