'Lost his grip': Man dies after falling from Sydney balcony following call to police

A man has died after falling from a seventh floor balcony in Sydney's west in what police called an "absolutely tragic" incident.

Police were called by a woman to a family domestic violence case at units on Hamilton Road in Fairfield at 2.10am today.

Officers arrived seven minutes later to find the 55-year-old straddling the balcony railing of a seventh-floor unit.

Police on the ground were pleading with the man to get on the safe side of the balcony, as other officers headed upstairs but a minute later they were performing CPR.

"The male lost his grip on the outside of the building and fell to the ground in front of police," NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden said.

NSW Ambulance paramedics tried to save him but he died after suffering head injuries.

"This is an absolutely tragic set of circumstances," McFadden said.

"Part of the investigation will look at the domestic and family violence that's taken place on the day."

He said an AVO was in place but it didn't specifically prevent contact but he wasn't allowed at her address.

The 46-year-old woman, who was inside the unit, was assessed for shock and minor injuries.

A crime scene was set up and an investigation launched.

It'll be the subject of an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
