A suspicious package found in Adelaide's CBD earlier today has turned out to be a false alarm.

Police were called to Waymouth Street to investigate reports of a device with wires at around 12pm, and closed off the surrounding area between Topham Mall and Post Office Lane while AFP officers and South Australian police members examined the object.

A bomb squad officer quickly discovered the device was what appeared to be a tradie's temperature probe which had been left against a wall.

The item was bagged and taken away, and the area was given the all clear.

Waymouth Street has since been reopened.
