Subway challenger to launch in Australia within hours
A major US food chain is set to launch into Australia this week, positioning itself as a new challenger to Subway.
Firehouse Subs will open its first store at Westfield Mount Gravatt in Brisbane’s south tomorrow.

The US chain was founded in Florida by two firefighter brothers and has since opened more than 1300 locations around the world.
Australian parent company Retail Food Group (RFG) said the business would aim to open at least 165 restaurants Down Under over the next 10 years.
The company has estimated the sandwich category is worth $1.7 billion in Australia and growing.
Subway is one of the most popular fast food chains in Australia, with around 1200 stores across the country.
Retail Food Group executive chairman Peter George said the opening would represent a key milestone in its partnership with Firehouse Subs parent company Restaurant Brands International.
“[This] is a culmination of a significant schedule of work, including the establishment of a domestic supply chain,” George said.
“We have positioned the brand for success and lease negotiations are progressing for additional sites, in support of our broader roll-out schedule and growth aspirations for each of our core brands.”
The brand’s introduction into the Australian market is a part of a growing trend of US restaurants expanding onto our shores.
Wendy’s, Wingstop and Chuck E Cheese have all opened in recent months.
Other popular restaurants including Popeyes are eyeing potential locations here.
Firehouse Subs is owned by Restaurant Brands International, which also owns US brands Burger King, Tim Horton’s and Popeyes.
Retail Food Group also owns Gloria Jeans, Donut King, Brumby’s Bakery, Crust Gourmet Pizza and Beefy’s Pies.
