Star Trek actor charged with drink driving in NZ

Star Trek actor Chris Pine is facing a drink-driving charge in New Zealand after a boozy night out with stars reportedly including Aussie actress Margot Robbie.

Chris Pine, who played Captain James Kirk in two Star Trek reboot blockbusters, was stopped during what police say was a routine drink-driving operation near the Canterbury town of Methven on March 1.

Pine is in Canterbury shooting Z For Zachariah, a Hollywood science fiction film set after a nuclear war starring The Wolf of Wall Street actress Margot Robbie and Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor, who starred in 12 Years As A Slave.

Both actors were believed to have been in the area on the night Pine was pulled over.

Casey Crawford, who manages the Blue Pub in Methven, said around 70 cast and crew hired the venue for a party to celebrate the end of filming on February 28.

The festivities reportedly broke up around 3am the next day, the same morning Pine was allegedly caught drink driving.

"Chris Pine arrived here and had his supermodel girlfriend (Iris Bjork Johannesdottir) with him and he spent most of his time with her, she flew in that day someone told me,'' Mr Crawford said.

"You can see the photos behind the bar with our staff and he looked fine, I only ever saw him drinking tap beer and his partner she was just drinking sav wine.''

He added that the party's organiser had arranged designated drivers to chauffeur those drinking, saying he was surprised that Pine had driven.

Canterbury police say a 33-year-old American national has been charged with drinking with excess blood alcohol and will appear in Ashburton District Court on March 17.

No further information will be released by police because the matter is before the courts.
