Spike in syphilis cases in Cairns

The number of people with syphilis in the Cairns area has almost doubled in the last year, health authorities warn.
The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service has recorded 59 notifications of infectious syphilis and one case of congenital syphilis in 2015 to the end of August.
This compares to 36 total notifications in 2014, with health professionals urging locals to practise safe sex.
