Spike in SA parasite cases

South Australians are being urged to practice pool hygiene after a spike in diagnoses of a potentially fatal parasitic disease.

Almost 400 people have contracted cryptosporidiosis in SA this year compared with 201 in 2014.

The disease, which induces diarrhoea and stomach cramps, can be fatal in patients with compromised immune systems.

Health Minister Jack Snelling says swimmers should maintain good hygiene and anyone who contracts the disease should avoid going in the pool for two weeks after their symptoms have stopped.
