Julie Bishop has chastised Labor over concerns about possible cuts to the foreign aid budget, telling the opposition to spare her its "crocodile tears".

The foreign minister was responding to a question from Labor querying whether she had received a guarantee the aid budget would be left untouched in the May budget.

Ms Bishop agreed the aid budget was under pressure.

"There is one reason it is under pressure: the Australian Labor Party," she told parliament on Tuesday, adding the opposition should look in the mirror if it was so concerned about the state of the aid budget.

Ms Bishop said Labor's spending on stimulus measures such as $900 cheques to taxpayers, pink batts and school halls had created a debt and deficit problem.

"Spare me the crocodile tears," she said.

Ms Bishop urged Labor to reveal where it would find money to put back into the aid budget.
