Dazzling southern lights illuminate Aussie skies on first night of winter
The Aurora Australis, or southern lights, were visible in parts of south and eastern Australia last night on the first night of winter.
The Australian Space Weather Alert System issued an alert for the geomagnetic storm.
However, it may have been a one off for now. The BOM told sky watchers: "There is a possibility of further G3 strong geomagnetic conditions later today but they are likely to ease by the evening, reducing chances of repeat Aurora sightings tonight."
Here are some of the dazzling shots taken by those who caught them.
Phil Dunne headed a little south of Sydney to the Royal National Park to capture the southern lights.
"On Saturday there was a CME on the sun that resulted in a strong solar storm that faced Earth," he said on Facebook.
"The main wave from the CME arrived around 7.30pm resulting in an Aurora that was visible to the naked eye as a dull red glow to the south."
Cassandra Missen saw the amazing spectacle from the town of Port MacDonnell in South Australia.
She didn't need any special gear, taking the photos on her iPhone.
"The Aurora Australis put on on amazing show tonight attempted a couple of shots with Ruby girl, she did pretty well attempting to stay still for the camera. Pretty happy with the photos taken from my iPhone," Missen said.

Missen's colourful shots show off the space weather phenomenon.
Kristie Brennan snapped these bright shots at Cape Bridgewater, west of Melbourne.
"Another aurora last night these are taken at Petrified Forest, Cape Bridgewater. It was so intense at one point with the colours and I could clearly see colours and beams," she said.
The Milky Way can be seen alongside the Southern Lights in this dazzling shot.
