Police release last CCTV footage of South Coogee man found murdered

Police are urging anybody with information to come forward after a 77-year-old man was found bashed to death inside his apartment at South Coogee in Sydney on Sunday.

Detectives investigating the suspected murder have released CCTV imagery of Peter McCarthy, who was found dead in his unit at Elphinstone Road on Sunday morning.

A post-mortem examination has revealed that Mr McCarthy died as a result of severe head and facial injuries.

The 77-year-old's last known whereabouts was at Club York in Sydney's CBD between 12.30pm and 2.30pm on Wednesday, December 16.

Detectives are urging anybody with information about Mr McCarthy's last movements to come forward and assist with the investigation.

Peter's son, James McCarthy, said he was devastated to be grieving his father.

Our family is devastated and still coming to terms with the loss of our father and grandfather, Peter.

We have all been deeply affected by this tragedy, especially at what should be a time of celebration and joy this Christmas.

We are grateful for the ongoing support from our family and friends and urge anyone in the community with information about the circumstances surrounding Dad's death to please come forward and speak with police.

As we continue to grieve and process this news, our family has requested privacy at this time.
