The animals depicted include the marraji (red kangaroo), jagurrugurru (emu), mardumbarrayi (the saltwater crocodile), darrmanji (the brolga) and the gulamandarrina (long-necked turtle).

Collectors also have a one-in-10 chance to find a special coloured coin in the set of five.

There will also be two proof coins which come in silver and aluminium bronze.

The coins depict the jurrgubadi (goanna) as he basks in the sun on a cool morning in the Northern Territory’s Barkly Tablelands.

The coins were designed by Gudanji/Wakaja and Kalkadoon artist Ryhia Dank, who is professionally known as Nardurna.

Royal Australian Mint chief executive officer Emily Martin said there was something special about the joy of finding a coloured coin in your change.

“It’s an unexpected little surprise that can brighten your day, and I hope Australians have fun looking out for the colourful goanna coin when they shop at Australia Post,” Martin said.
