The posts have sent the hashtag “#smugvegetarian” trending.

The WHO said bacon, ham and processed meats such as sausages, as well as “probably” red meat, could cause colorectal cancer.

“Feeling a bit more self-righteous than usual today #smugvegetarian” wrote Twitter user Erin, with the handle @EB_McErlean.

“I haven’t been this smug to be a vegetarian since lasagne turned out to be full of horse,” another user, Jo, wrote.

A lot of commenters also encouraged meat eaters to change their diet in response to the news.

“My smugness may be annoying, but it’s backed up by science, yo,” one user wrote.

However, meat eaters weren’t so receptive to the news.

“I’ll die with bacon in my hand,” one meat warrior posted.
