His owner last saw his dog alive around 7.45am, and made the horrific discovery when he returned home at 6.15pm.

Victoria Police said they had no idea why the senseless slaughter had occurred.

“There appears to be nothing stolen, or signs of forced entry,” Detective Senior Constable Warren Atkinson said.

“The owner has told us that Wilbur was a quiet dog who trained as an airport sniffer dog, but became a much loved pet when he failed the test.”

To his owner’s knowledge, Wilbur had never shown any signs of aggression.

Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
