Special Operations Police have rammed the front of a Dandenong South home in an effort to drive out a wanted man at the centre of a stand off that has lasted almost eight hours.

The 30-year-old, believed to be alone in the house, was asked to leave the Tarene Street property at around 12.15pm but refused.

Police said they do not know if the man is armed, and evacuated the neighbourhood as a precaution.

The Special Operations Group (SOG) officers have rammed the house three times in an effort to force the man out.

At about 6.30pm, SOG officers smashed the front window of the house in yet another effort to drive the man out of the house.

Tarene Street has been blocked between Usher Court and Haresta Avenue, with residents forced to leave their homes.
