Gold Coast gun crime labelled ‘out of control’ after spate of shootings

Gold Coast leaders have demanded action after three shooting incidents in the city in just two weeks.

Carl Schwalger, his wife, and his mother were watching television in their lounge room last night, when Mr Schwalger noticed car lights outside their Arundel property.

Peering out the window to investigate, Mr Schwalger noticed two men across the road and a dark vehicle.

“Just saw a car stop and I looked out the window and then heard a crack,” Mr Schwalger said.

“It only missed my head by about an inch, just looking through the window.

“Yeah, counting my blessings… pretty scared now”.

Mr Schwalger's 21-year-old daughter was also home at the time of the incident and called the police.

Incredibly, no one was injured.

Police have taken CCTV from the property to help investigate the matter. They are now searching for two men and a dark vehicle.

Detectives believe the alleged offenders are known to the victim.

Last night's shooting was the third on the Gold Coast in two weeks.

On December 30, a man was fatally shot at a Southport house, while three days ago Carrara father was gunned down through his front door.

The incidents were 15 kilometres away from each other and police do not believe they are linked.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate is among leaders who are demanding more action to put a stop to gun crime, especially with the Commonwealth Games 12 weeks away.

“The state’s reputation and the city’s reputation is at stake,” Mr Tate said.

“We want more police.”
