A serial child sex predator abused a Victorian boy he was babysitting while on bail for other child abuse charges.

Tony Troy, 47, was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to abusing a boy while babysitting him and on camping trips and outings with his family.

It is the third time Troy has been convicted of child sex charges in Victoria, following convictions in 1997 and 2013.

Troy was on bail for the charges which led to his 2013 conviction when he abused the boy on multiple occasions between August 2012 and March 2013.

He did not disclose to the boy's parents that he was a convicted sex offender, before they let him stay at their home and babysit their son.

Victorian County Court Judge Paul Lacava said Troy's crimes had forever altered the lives of his victim and his family.

"The parents blame themselves for not protecting their children and for trusting you," he told Troy.

"The consequences of the offending have a ripple effect that is almost unending."

Troy pleaded guilty to an attempted indecent act with a child, an indecent act with a child and sexual penetration of a child.

Judge Lacava jailed him for nine years on Wednesday.

Because he is already serving another jail sentence for the 2013 conviction, he will not be eligible for parole for 12 and a half years.
