Senate threatened with extended hours to deal with legislative agenda

Senators preparing to end their year are in for a rude shock, with the federal government to try and keep parliament open until it's dealt with its legislative agenda.
Thursday was due to be the Senate's last day for 2014, but the government will try to extend sitting late into the night and into Friday if needed.
It still needs approval, but if agreed the Senate will sit every day, including weekends, until six mandated bills are dealt with.
Top of the agenda will be the government's controversial bid to reintroduce temporary protection visas for refugees, which is being hotly contested in the upper house.
