Senate calls for Samarco compensation

The Australian Senate has flagged its support for compensation for a Brazilian community flattened by the Samarco iron ore mine disaster.
Australian Greens senator Scott Ludlam on Tuesday won upper house support for a motion offering condolences to the people of Bento Rodrigues following the BHP and Vale mine waste spill that killed 12 and left thousands homeless.
The Senate also called on BHP and Australian corporations to uphold environmental laws and stated its support for compensation to be paid by the owners of the Samarco mine.
