Security boosted again for federal parly

Parliament House will get a major security upgrade with its ministerial wing being fortified with a new fence and bullet-proof windows.

Speaker Bronwyn Bishop on Thursday got approval for work to start on a new perimeter fence, gatehouse facilities, replacement of glazed window frames and additional bollards.

The Senate also agreed to the security upgrades.

However, Labor and independent senator Nick Xenophon combined to get a committee to examine the work's impact on those who work in or visit Parliament House.

They also want to make sure parliament gets value for money and that the work doesn't impinge on any heritage or moral rights.

Last year, security officers were given greater firepower to protect the building from terrorist attacks.

LATEST SECURITY UPGRADE:

* Steel security fence, retractable gates at southern facade of ministerial wing.

* Additional seven external cameras at the enclosure and gatehouse facilities.

* Gatehouse facility outside wing entrance made of pre-cast concrete with stainless steel and aluminium window framing.

* Vehicle bollards at base of ministerial entrance stairs.

* Ballistic proof window glazing at ministerial ground floor entrance.
