Second Colombian charged over alleged plot to control migrants in Adelaide

A second person has been charged after authorities found migrants had been controlled and locked in cupboards at an Adelaide home.

Federal police yesterday arrested a 35-year-old woman from Colombia at a Kilburn home and charged her with human exploitation offences.

She faced Adelaide Magistrates Court today and was granted bail under strict conditions.

Last month, police arrested 38-year-old Christian Diaz Suarez, also from Colombia, from the same address and charged him with similar offences.

Suarez was remanded in custody and also faced Adelaide Magistrates Court today.

Police allege the woman was involved in ongoing and degrading treatment of other residents also living at the property.

Those residents were allegedly members of a youth group Suarez had led in Venezuela.

He helped the group migrate to Adelaide in 2015 and 2016.

But after they arrived, he allegedly took control of their passports and used that to maintain control and servitude.

Police allege the two accused had daily control of the group by tracking their movements, restricting daily activities, scheduling compulsory daily chores, controlling earnings and forcing victims to pay off debts that were unreasonably enforced.

Suarez is alleged to have locked some migrants in cupboards for multiple days.

The alleged operation took place at the Kilburn home as well as other parts of Australia.

The pair are each facing a combined maximum penalty of 27 years in prison.
