Man arrested over child kidnapping 'went to Gold Coast for holiday', says mum
The mother of a Sydney man allegedly involved in the abduction of a school boy on the Gold Coast earlier this month says she believed her son was travelling to the Gold Coast for a holiday.
Sunny Zhang, 20, handed himself in to police at Cabramatta Police Station last night, almost a fortnight after police named him as a person of interest in the abduction of a 12-year-old on the Gold Coast home on May 11.
The young boy was allegedly bound, gagged and bundled into a Jeep near his Mudgeeraba home on May 11.
Less than 24 hours later, he was found by police in Grafton, more than 200km south of the Gold Coast, and has been since been reunited with his family.
While the young boy did not recognise the man who grabbed him, it’s alleged he identified Mr Zhang, 53, who is known to the family.
"I just knew he went to Gold Coast for holiday with someone for a few days. The other things, I don't know," she said.
"He's a good boy. He's just 20 years old - he is scared."
Detectives from the Gold Coast will fly into Sydney ahead of Mr Zhang's next court appearance tomorrow, when they will try to have him extradited to Queensland to face charges.
