Scott Morrison responds after Albury egging

Scott Morrison has been struck by an egg at a CWA function in Albury.

Mr Morrison was speaking when a woman hit him with the egg earlier this morning.

The egg bounced unbroken off the prime minister's head and did not break when it hit the ground.

"My concern about today’s incident in Albury was for the older lady who was knocked off her feet. I helped her up and gave her a hug," Mr Morrison tweeted in the aftermath.

"Our farmers have to put up with these same idiots who are invading their farms and their homes."

The protester was quickly taken away by security.

"We will stand up to thuggery whether it’s these cowardly activists who have no respect for anyone, or militant unionists standing over small businesses and their employees on work sites," Mr Morrison said.

ACTU Secretary Sally McManus was clearly insulted by the connection.

"How dare you accuse us of this and make the association," she tweeted.

"You seem to have no respect for the truth or any concern about running down your fellow Australians.

"We would never support such behaviour."

Bill Shorten expressed his sympathy to Morrison and the woman who was knocked down.

"In Australia we have violence-free elections. People are allowed to protest peacefully but anything approaching violence is unacceptable," he told reporters in Geelong.

"If this protester thinks she will get sympathy or support from me she couldn't be more wrong."

Mr Shorten said he wasn't going to judge Mr Morrison for connecting the attack to the union movement because it was "a very upsetting experience".

It is the second high-profile egging in Australian politics in recent weeks.

Senator Fraser Anning was struck by an egg in the wake of his comments on the Christchurch massacre.
