Prince Charles and Camilla touch down in Adelaide and sample the local drop

Thousands of Aussies are flocking to greet Prince Charles and his wife Camilla as they arrive in Australia, with one group of hopeful schoolkids even using their lunch to try and nab themselves a better spot in the crowd.

The royal visit Down Under started in Adelaide this afternoon after a six day tour of New Zealand.

Residents have been lining up along the main street in Tanunda since this morning in order ensure they catch a glimpse of the couple.

One group of innovative children, from a primary school in Barossa, wanted to see the pair so badly they even tried to bribe police to snag themselves a better view.

They offered up their most valuable commodity – a jam sandwich.

South Australia Police shared a picture of a policeman laughing at the offer to its Facebook page.

“It nearly worked!!” police joked.

Facebook users commended the children for their efforts.

“Well you gotta try,” one said.

“That’s awesome! Good try guys,” another said.

“Should have used donuts,” another quipped.

Prince Charles and Camilla will be in Australia for six days.

They previously visited Australia in 2012.
