Bali Nine lawyer calls on Australian government to oppose death penalty for Boston bomber

The lawyer who represented Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran has called on the Australian government to speak out against the death penalty handed to Boston marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in the US.

Veronica Haccou says she promised the executed Bali Nine drug smugglers she would fight the death penalty, no matter the crime.

The pair were executed by firing squad on April 29 after 10 years on death row in Indonesia. 

A US jury sentenced 21-year-old Tsarnaev to death on Friday for his role in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, which he carried out with his brother.

Three people died and 264 others were wounded in the blasts, including 17 who lost limbs.

Ms Haccou says the Australian government must remain consistent in its opposition to the penalty.

"It is nothing but premeditated, state-sanctioned murder," the lawyer said in a statement yesterday.

Ms Haccou said reform was always possible, even in the case of the Boston bomber.
