Jail over role in deadly pub brawl that led to dad's death

A man has been jailed over a post boxing-match brawl that claimed the life of a Perth father. 

Salvatore Raimondi, 33, was today sentenced to four years and four months behind bars, for his role in the fight outside an Ellenbrook pub in February last year, that led to the death of Diego Hulton. 

Raimondi admitted to punching the victim in the head, causing him to fall and hit his head on the bitumen.

He also admitted to kicking Mr Hulton as he lay on the floor unconscious, before fleeing the scene. 

The court heard the fight erupted after the Danny Green vs Anthony Mundine boxing match and was instigated by the victim's brother who was evicted from the Brook Bar and Bistro and started arguing with security. 

Mr Hulton got caught up in the punch up between other patrons.

The 37-year-old father was rushed to hospital but was declared brain dead, and his life support switched off four days later. 

Today the court was told Raimondi wasn't being sentenced for causing the victim's death, but rather for his actions that endangered his life.

Justice Andrew Stavrianou agreed with defence lawyer Michael Tudori that no-one could prove which of Mr Hulton's injuries caused his death. 

But the judge said there was "no dispute it was your (Raimondi's) one punch that put him on the ground. It was a cowardly act and completely unjustified ... He was clearly defenceless, lying on the ground and you kicked him".

He described the mobile phone footage of the incident as "disturbing" and said the behaviour of everyone involved was "tribal". 

In sentencing Raimondi, the Judge said the community did not accept this kind of behaviour and there was the potential for it to cause death. 

"You struck the deceased in the head, it was a forceful blow," he said.

He said Raimondi's conduct was "cowardly, unnecessary and alcohol-fuelled." 

Raimondi showed no emotion as his sentence was handed down but was facing away from the public gallery. 

He will be eligible for parole after serving two years and four months.
