SA alleged baby killer gets bail

A 40-year-old Adelaide woman charged with the murder of her nine-week-old baby will be released on home detention bail.

Michelle Allison Beal appeared by video link in Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday where magistrate Alf Grasso agreed to her release subject to her being discharged from mental health care at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The court was told Beal is expected to be discharged by her consulting psychiatrist on Monday unless there is a deterioration in her condition.

The court had previously heard that Beal's mental state was "fragile" with two psychiatric reports now prepared over her current mental health.

She is alleged to have killed her baby son at her home on December 5 and was initially detained under the Mental Health Act.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the property after receiving reports of an "unresponsive baby".

"Despite the efforts of paramedics, the baby was pronounced deceased at the scene," police said in a statement at the time.

No details on the cause of death have been released.

In court on Wednesday, a prosecutor said it would take six to eight months for the preparation of a post-mortem report and for other forensic material to be available.

Mr Grasso adjourned the case to Adelaide Magistrates Court on September 18.

As part of her bail conditions, Beal will be subject to electronic monitoring and must agree to any ongoing psychiatric treatment considered necessary.
