Woman, 72, killed, son hospitalised in Adelaide house fire

Residents in a quiet street in Adelaide's north are mourning the loss of a friendly neighbour, who died when fire engulfed the back bedroom of her home.

Emergency services were called to a home on Broughton Road in Elizabeth Vale in the city's north about 3.45am.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze in minutes, but a 72-year-old woman was found dead inside.

Her 54-year-old son was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

He was discharged this afternoon, briefly returning to the home.

The family dog, who was originally thought missing, was found hiding under an ambulance.

Residents on the street say the 72-year-old was friendly and considerate.

"They bring us lemons all the time, and yeah, it's very, very sad," neighbour Rob Coleman said.

"I can't believe it, just before Christmas, it's just terrible."

The house sustained relatively little external damage.

The cause of the blaze remains unknown, but it is not believed to be suspicious.
